What I’ve heard at 1200 doors
I've knocked on more than 1200 doors – personally, on every street in Ward 10 – and had over 300 conversations. People have been generous with their thoughts and time. Here's what I've heard:
People are worried about homelessness — it came up more than twice as often as any other issue. They're not angry at the people sleeping rough — they're frustrated that the problem is getting worse, and worried about what it means for the people who need help and for the city.
People are also worried about public safety. I've talked to plenty of families who say how much they love it here — they're right, kids still roam Ward 10 neighbourhoods like we did in the 1980s — but I've also talked to families who have sold their home, because they no longer feel that our neighbourhood is a good place to raise kids. I've talked to owners and employees of downtown businesses who deal with daily theft and aggression.
People want both compassion and results, and they're tired of being told those are in conflict.
They're also talking about trails and active transportation — a lot. I met an 80-year-old who just got an e-bike and couldn't be happier. I've met dozens of kids on balance bikes. People want better cycling infrastructure. Several people sent me detailed notes about traffic calming after I left.
People also care about development — what gets built, where, and whether the city actually listens when it says it’s consulting. They care about the exhibition grounds, about treed neighbourhoods and welcoming streetscapes, about having a proper pool. They care about affordability: many people who are housed are right on the edge. They care about recycling and composting.
What I take from all of this is that Ward 10 is full of people who pay attention and care about each other and the neighbourhood and want a councillor who will listen.
I've also talked with kids. They're astute and thoughtful, and also hilarious: "ARE YOU KELLY MURRAY!?" Yes, yes I am. You've seen me all over the Ward, and I'm not done.
Election Day isn't until May 11. Drop me a note if you'd like me to knock on your door!
