Kelly is running to serve on council because she loves living in Fredericton - its downtown, its neighbourhoods, its trails & natural spaces, its history, & its people.
Platform.
Affordable Housing & Homelessness.
I have served as president of the board of directors of Fredericton’s Liberty Lane for the past 10 years. In that position I expanded services and affordable housing for individuals affected by domestic violence, overseeing a successful building project and capital campaign.
If elected, I would support council in taking a leadership role in collaborations with governments, non-profits, and private sector partners to support affordable housing and homelessness initiatives, as well as complementary elements such as mental health and addictions support. I would support the development of tools to incentivize affordable housing. I would support continuation of the work of groups such as the Affordable Housing Committee and Community Action Group on Homelessness.
Economic Growth & Resiliency.
Having led a variety of non-profit organizations, from the grassroots to national level, I understand that growth must be fostered alongside responsible fiscal management. I have worked at small organizations with challenging budgets, and also in international risk policy for a major bank. In my current position on the board of directors of Cycling Canada, I chair the national insurance committee and am responsible for oversight of financial and risk management, succession planning, and overall organizational strategy.
Fredericton’s walkable downtown, access to nature, vibrant businesses, technology and arts sectors, rich history, and wonderful people afford an enviable quality of life that we can leverage to attract people and businesses to further enrich our city. At the same time, we must respond to increasing pressure on city services and housing, navigate a recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, and extend our successes to those who are left out. The tools we need are ones I’ve used in other roles.
Governance & Engagement.
As an elected member of the board of directors of Cycling Canada, I have developed policies and procedures to assure transparency and accountability, led engagement around policy and programming initiatives, strengthened partnerships with major stakeholders, and participated in the development of a transformative 10-year strategic plan.
In a complex environment with multiple stakeholders and few simple solutions, these are the tools and approaches that we will need to be successful. As your representative on council, I commit to engaging constructively and with an open mind and attention to detail, and to working to implement measures to commit us to robust engagement, accountability and transparency. That is how we will create a foundation for sound decisions that will move us forward.
Natural Spaces, Recreation, & Active Transportation.
Most people in Ward 10 can probably picture me most easily on a bike or in a canoe. Since I have lived in Fredericton, I have been involved in sport and trail and environmental organizations at all levels, from supporting my community bike and cross-country ski clubs, to 8 years as chair of the provincial cycling organization, to my current work with the national organization.
People of all ages have told me how much they value being able to walk or cycle around the neighbourhood and downtown, at any time of year. Natural and recreational community spaces and active transportation options are healthy for us, our community, and our planet. If elected, this is a priority I will work to incorporate into all of our decision making.
