Outgoing Council to confirm expropriation

Council has called a special meeting for tomorrow to vote on confirming its intent to expropriate.

My position is that the City and NBEX can both win by negotiating an agreement. I wrote about it here.

A lot of people have questioned doing this on the eve of the election. I can see that view, but I also understand the decision.

I've spent a long time on nonprofit boards making complex, consequential decisions. When a new board comes in, they haven't been privy to the months of work that led there. No one wants to start their first day at a new job with a big decision they don’t feel prepared for. Even with best efforts to bring them up to speed, it always feels like an ambush. It’s natural that the outgoing council would want to finish its work.

Yesterday’s Gleaner survey indicates that a majority of responding candidates question the expropriation. I think focusing on the decision to expropriate misses the point. The real issue is whether we negotiate an agreement or go to court. That will be up to the new council.
